War for the Overworld Guide

Units

There are many different units in War for the Overworld. Many that will serve an Underlord, and many others that will oppose Underlords. Then again, a crafty Underlord can always find ways to bend the will of others.

Units can be controlled in different ways. Units can be picked up as long as they are on territory that the Underlord has claimed, and can then be dropped on territory claimed by the Underlord. Note that allied territory also qualifies. For a more direct approach, you may directly possess units with the Possession spell. This lets you control the exact movement and actions of a unit. Unit abilities may be selected by pressing the number for an ability, or by using the Mouse Wheel to scroll through the available abilities.

Levels

Most units can gain experience and level up. Leveling up will improve just about every stat of the unit, as well as their wage for payday. Experience is gained from combat, or training in the Barracks or Arena. There are also some additional means for raising the experience of your units such as potions, artefacts and the Spirit Chamber. Note that Beasts can not get experience in the Barracks or Spirit Chamber.

Each unit must accumulate a certain amount of experience before their level increases. You can see this on the pages for each individual unit where it lists the required experience for each level. Note that this is the required experience to reach the next level, not to reach the current level. Oddly enough, the game shows an experience requirement to raise level up from 10. However, at level 10 units simply can't gain experience anymore as 10 is the maximum level.

Availability

Normally you will only be able to get the units under the "Underlord Minions" and "Beasts" and "Titans" categories. The campaigns deviate from this slightly, the War for the Overworld campaign do not feature the Sentinel and Thunderling. The Heart of Gold campaign do not feature the Thunderling. And the Under Games campaign have more variation based on what Underlord you choose to play as.

If you have an Overworld Gateway available for capture, then you can attracts some of the units from the "Empire Units" category.

With the "Sacrifice" ritual in the Sanctuary, you can in theory obtain all units as long as you have a Beast Den and a regular Underworld Gateway. But this would require a lot of time and patience to attract the required number of units.
